We wants it, we needs it, the preeciiiooousssss.....

And there's something else I've thought of. I found the Windows XP disk we have(It's pro, not home. Dunno what we did with the home disk.), but it was already used on one of the computers. However, it's my dad's computer that it was used on. He'll probably get rid of that one in favor of the Media Center when I get the iMac. Will there be problems using that disk with Parallels or Bootcamp?

Ronnie Rowlands October 6, 2007 6:02 PM

This computer is an iMac. You DON'T want an iMac. Not this one anyway. This one is a shed. A shed that has passed its prime.

Ronnie is talking about his 1999 iMac with a 600 MHz processor and 256 MB of memory. Ignore him.

For the record, I have an even older iMac (the one I mentioned several posts back) and it still performs decently for me.

Chris Britton October 6, 2007 6:36 PM

iMacs are not just computers, they are a thing of beauty, one of the last lights against the battle against Microborg.

One fo my hall mates here at Uni has a Mac. It's so wonderful to use. it makes you feel good to be alive :)

Exactly. :D

I think I'm going to either:

a. Throw up.

or

b. Go out and buy the biggest and bestest Mac I can find and smash it to pieces in front of you all.

Your lack of computer knowledge is showing. :P

You do realize that CDs are read-only, right? It's not like Microsoft can deactivate a Windows disc once it's been installed once and prevent it from being used again. :P

What they can do is disable your product key. Which is why I would recommend grabbing an XP Pro SP2 Corporate CD from online, then you don't have to worry about keys or activation or anything like that.

Still, you won't know until you try. But it might be a good idea to have a second (downloaded) disc ready in case you can't use your original for whatever reason.

(Also, Pro > Home. Don't use Home. Home = Evil + Suck.)

Superkid11 October 7, 2007 9:54 PM

I'll do that. I'm more willing to do that now seeing as I can just tell my mom and dad that the legit CD worked. :P
Worst case scenario I guess if I can't burn one is that we'll have to call somebody who is likely in India to get a new key code.
I just downloaded one. Do I burn just the ISO or the or both the ISO and the MSinfo document that came with it?
(Lol, and earlier I downloaded Photoshop CS3. Arr! I actually got it so I could get an activation code for my girlfreind instead of me though. Would that make me more of a Robin Hood than a pirate?)

And is there a way to stop the Windows part from accessing the internet but let the Mac part? :)

You do understand how ISO files work, right? They are CD images. You do not simply put the ISO onto a disc -- you use a burning program to write the contents of the ISO to a disc. An ISO file is an exact image copy of a disc. You can ignore the .nfo file -- but you may want to check and see if there's a key in there. (Open it with Notepad.)

Call yourself what you like. :P

Although you should get Adobe CS3 for Mac for yourself.

Umm, sure. With Boot Camp, you could just unplug the wire or not connect it to your wireless access point or what have you. With Parallels, you can simply disable the network interface.

Superkid11 October 9, 2007 3:43 PM

Well, I burned it. I already had a program capible of ISO burning, by Roxio. Unsettlingly, OneCare caught it trying to access the internet before I burned the cd. Fortunately I could block it. Now I have to hide it in the attic.
If I use the non-legit one one of the reasons I want to block it from accessing the internet is incase it has built-in spyware or something. :P The reviews were good though.

On another forum I read you can install a legit copy of XP on up to 3 computers, is that true?

Unjustified paranoia alert. :P

Roxio just checks the internet to see if there are any updates available.

It won't have built-in spyware. Besides, spyware slows down your computer regardless of whether you're connected to the internet or not. I think you're overreacting to all this. Just let them both use the internet. No harm will be done.

Nope, that's completely untrue. If you go to the store and buy a copy of Windows XP, you are buying one license. One license is used up on each computer you install it on. That doesn't mean you can't install it on multiple computers anyway, but that's not what Microsoft intends and it will likely not activate properly.

Chris Britton October 10, 2007 9:39 AM

I find peoples lack of faith in iMacs, distrubing. <Force choakes the Microsoft fans>

Ronnie Rowlands October 10, 2007 12:08 PM

Yes yes yes hooray for macs, boo to Microsoft. Kill all the Microsoft users. They are scum and Microsoft is a retard. How about everyone tones it down a bit and stops linking Microsoft to every bad thing in the world?

Crud. Oh well, I'm not planning on getting rid of the CD I burnt. :P I hid it in a Gamecube box up in the attic. I sure hope I remember it...
I may wind up installing the legit one then secretly uninstalling it and installing the downloaded one.

Ronnie's right. It was funny for a while but gimme a break.

I actually had doubts about the iMac until I was more informed...
Now I'm drooling over them and can't wait til December to get one. :P

I find it strange that everyone "hates" to admit it when they agree with me. It's quite hurtful really.

You're right, I take it back entirely. I just flat agree. It was kind of funny for a while but seriously.
It just enforces the stereotype that RV is convinced about.

I don't say what I say out of blind love for Apple, nor do I say it out of blind hatred for Microsoft (although it is closer to the latter than the former). I say what I say because I'm well informed about both Microsoft and Apple, and I am seriously afraid of where Microsoft is heading.

It's not as unjustified as you think. My mom and dad are pretty anti-piracy. :P Yeah, they were cool with me downloading Doctor Who but this would set them off. The CD is pretty obviously what it is.
Seeing as they're paying for the computer I'm not gonna set them off.

Heh. That's quite a contrast to my house. My dad asks me to download software for him off the internet. In fact, when I want to go out and buy software legitimately, he yells at me for wasting money. "Why would you spend so much money on that when you can just download it?" Logic Studio being the primary example of that.

Microsoft Table Surface Vista? Yeah, you never know when it's going to freeze up and loose its tangibility.

No, actually we're referring to a real Microsoft product called Surface: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/

What, nowhere in particular? They're a technology company, not a necessities provider; if they **** things up they go out of business and someone else will take their place, either Apple or the Open Source movement. They make good things, and they make bad things. It's the consumers responsibility to not be a brand-worshipping ****tard and buy something just because they like the name of it's provider. View the market as competing products, not companies. Take the side of a good product, not what you believe to be a good company, because no company gives two shits about you. They just care about how they can convince you to give them as much money as possible.

Right now Microsoft have created the best value console of this generation because they're the underdog in the market. I, however, most certainly will not be buying the console they make if or when they're in a position like Sony was post PS3, when leveraging brand power comes first and quality comes second (similar to how Apple has begun to act in regards to their iPod music player), because I don't give two shits about the Microsoft or Xbox brand, I just want to play good ****ing games for as cheap as possible.

And, oddly enough, my Xbox hasn't RRoD'd yet. I must be in the extreme minority, though, right? Because every Xbox360 overheats. My Xbox still working is a fluke. I guess the Microsoft angel is watching over me, because I don't have any problems with Windows either. I should go buy a lottery ticket, eh?

Science forbid that there might, say, be a vocal minority on the internet.

Look at the concept, not the brand. If Microsoft develops this, competitors will develop their own, so it's not worth dismissing just because Microsoft developed it. As a concept, this could turn out very well. Think of the applications for it: You could apply this not only to coffee tables but desks and wall panels. I'd love to have a desk I could draw on, see what I was drawing and have that on my monitor as well. Sure would beat shitty drawing tablets.

It would also take the concept of the object-oriented interface to the max, creating an interface that quite literally any idiot could use. For the young, the old and especially the disabled this would be a huge advantage.

I bet if Apple came up with the idea, though, you'd think it was the second coming, amirite? :P

I agree. Which is why I like Macs and associated hardware and software so much. Because it's superior.

I've been working with Windows for a long time, and I rely more on my personal observations than what people on the internet say. I've worked at dozens of different client sites, and the vast majority of them hate Windows because it's unreliable and it's buggy. So yes, based on my experience, you actually are in the minority.

I wish you'd stop with the "plastic" remarks. They're just annoying, and mostly untrue. Only one computer Apple makes anymore still uses plastic (the basic MacBook) and rumor has it they'll be upgraded in the next couple of months.

And Macs run games fine, thx.

You know, according to the adverts being shown in the UK, the iMac isn't actually a computer. It's just an object. It doesn't do anything, it has no features, it just sits there, looking out of place on your old fashioned desks, against your shagpile carpet and painted walls. Even your leather desk chair looks out of place. If you're lucky, it might even spin around, but as you can't plug it into anything, you can't give it any energy to do this.

You'd need to your whole country just so that my iMac looks right.
