Indeed. I downloaded Realplayer and my mum's reaction was "OMGZ U DOWNLOADIN A VIRUZ UR BREKKIN MY COMP!??"

Mind you, looking back, she was probably right.

Chris Britton April 10, 2008 4:05 PM

There's nothing dangerous about realplayer though. Yes there are better media players but it's not dangerous. I use VLC myself.

Josef Kenny April 10, 2008 4:06 PM

I think RealPlayer IS dangerous. It's effectively 'softcore' adware.

Ronnie Rowlands April 10, 2008 4:07 PM

Exactly, don't want any of that porn on my computer.

And those 'news' links that pop up in the corner that are 16 years out of date and stay there because their UI dev team were all stoned.

RealPlayer is awful. Truly, truly awful. It's slow and bloated and chock full of ads and unwanted extra software.

Superkid11 April 10, 2008 4:22 PM

The best media players are:

Quicktime+Flip4Mac and Perian

VLC.

I use both. Quicktime most of the time, but VLC is definitely awesome.

Wholeheartedly agreed. VLC is awesome, but I prefer QuickTime with Flip4Mac and Perian. It's pretty much bulletproof, and much more nicely integrated into Mac OS X.

VLC's very good. Generally I use Media Player Classic with the K-Lite Codec Pack on Windows just because it seems a tiny bit less bloated, but VLC is definitely still good.

Jamie Minty April 10, 2008 4:46 PM

Whats a good picture editing software for Mac. Just to make collages with pics and stuff?

Superkid11 April 10, 2008 4:48 PM

It's also a turnon that VLC's codecs are built in.

Indeed -- that's a huge point in its favor.

Kody April 10, 2008 5:24 PM

http://www.cccp-project.net/ - All I ever need.

Installs all the codecs, then you just use Windows Media Player Classic to play anything and everything(almost). Tis rather nice.

Chris Britton April 10, 2008 5:49 PM

Another good generic photo editing software is The Gimp.

It's unrelated to Windows Media Player -- it's just Media Player Classic, sans the "Windows." (Thankfully -- I wouldn't use it otherwise.)

I prefer the K-Lite Codec Pack personally. I don't know if it's actually better... it's just always been my preference.

The Mac port is very unreliable, and he asked specifically about Mac software.

Oh, dur, my bad on that one. Thanks for correcting me.

And yeah, codec packs do seem to come down to personal taste these days, considering there are a good few to choose from.
