"Sealing the Void"

Every now and then, Murray Gold will do something particularly well with his incidental music score on Doctor Who. I felt he did something particularly well yesterday in his score for "Doomsday" -- the music that plays when the bridge through the void connecting the Doctor's world to Pete's world is closed and the Doctor and Rose are forever separated.

To that end, I sat down this evening and spent approximately two hours recreating that piece in its entirety. I figured some of you here might like to hear it, so without further ado, here is Murray Gold's piece that I have dubbed "Sealing the Void." :)

Click here to listen to "Sealing the Void," recreated from Murray Gold's score by Danny Stewart.

I hope you enjoy it!

Lovely remake.

All the music from the past two seasons has me yearning for an official Gold soundtrack release, perhaps a 2 CD Deluxe Edition soundtrack album...

Someone posted the original version, as featured on the official homepage, for a limited time on a file server. The link can be found on this IMDb thread.

Thanks BritCanuck. I too recorded it, but I haven't made it available online yet. Strictly speaking it's not exactly the same -- it was played twice during the episode, the first time just after the bridge to the void is closed, the second during the beach scene. The one on the BBC web site is the second (beach) one, but the one I recreated is the first one. The second one has some added guitar and additional drums. Mine lacks those (because it's not based on that version). I'm considering taking a stab at that version (or perhaps extending my original to include it) later on.

Ross Hendrie July 11, 2006 5:46 PM

I listened to it, and from what it's worth coming from a non-remixer, sounds good.

Danny Stewart July 11, 2006 9:42 PM

Thank you, Ross! It was intended for non-remixers and people who wanted the music. Your opinion is most valuable here.

Ronnie Rowlands July 12, 2006 3:38 AM

My dad will be particularly glad to hear this one. I was speaking to him on the phone and he said that there was a bit of music in it that he really liked. He says thanks for making it available for him to listen to :)

Danny Stewart July 12, 2006 10:50 AM

You and your dad are both very welcome. :)

Alexus July 26, 2006 12:46 PM

That's nice. Very nice :D

Danny Stewart July 26, 2006 1:09 PM

Thank you very much. :D

Dalek104 August 6, 2006 12:14 AM

I think this is a superb recreation, Danny! Well done! So much better than what I could ever do...I'm not much of a music-maker, hehe!

Danny Stewart August 6, 2006 5:58 PM

Thank you very much, Dalek! :D

Ben Dawson August 7, 2006 4:23 AM

To Britcanuck, there is a Murray Gold soundtrack coming out. No official release date has been set but it is deffinitely coming out soon.

Anytime, Danny! I'm happy to make others happy! :)

Danny Stewart August 8, 2006 1:16 AM

And I'm happy to be made happy by others making others happy. Or something. ;)

Dalek104 August 8, 2006 6:11 AM

So that makes everyone happy!

Danny Stewart August 8, 2006 12:47 PM

Precisely. :D

Dalek104 August 10, 2006 6:18 AM

You know what peice of incidental music I think you should make next, Danny? The 'Rose' theme. You probably don't know what I mean. It's the music played from the very start of the episode 'Rose' when she wakes up and goes to work. It's also played at the beginning of 'The Doctor Dances' and 'New Earth'. It would be great if you were to make a recreation of this! It's my favourite Doctor Who incidental music!
Thanks!

Dalek104 August 13, 2006 8:21 PM

Hmm...My Edit button won't appear to edit my above post, so I'll have to make a new post to say this.

Either the Rose theme, or....
Song For Ten. But I'm talking about the piano/orchestral version used at the end of School Reunion. It's hard to pick out, but as long as you have the tune worked out from The Christmas Invasion you can then add the version from the beginning of Army of Ghosts which is the same as from School Reunion but without the piano and more of an orchestra. Sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm in a bit of a hurry right now. Sorry! :o

Hope you take note of this Danny and I look forward to listening to more of your incidental work!

Danny Stewart August 21, 2006 8:43 PM

Thanks for your support, Dalek! I will attempt to turn out more soon, although I'm hard at work on a top secret project right now so it'll have to wait a little bit. :D

Dalek104 August 22, 2006 4:08 AM

Oo! Does the 'top secret project' have anything to do with this website?

Ronnie Rowlands August 22, 2006 4:19 AM

yes, we're all eager to know:)

Ross Hendrie August 22, 2006 2:17 PM

Yeah, I think it's to do with Doctor Who. Ive heard about it too. Though I won't divulge what I know about it.

Ben Dawson August 23, 2006 4:02 AM

when will we find out what it is? It must be fantastic if it's top secret.

Danny Stewart August 24, 2006 12:39 PM

Actually, it has to do with a new piece of music I'm working on, with a little (actually a lot of) help from someone very special. :D

Ronnie Rowlands August 25, 2006 8:50 AM

Can I hazard a guess as to who it is?

Ben Dawson August 25, 2006 12:15 PM

go on, I know what you're gonna say though.

Danny Stewart August 26, 2006 12:05 PM

I will be entertaining no guesses and I recommend you do not spoil the enjoyment and surprise for others who may not know who it might be. Be patient and the new mix will be coming soon. :D

Ben Dawson August 26, 2006 2:48 PM

Well, I'll keep my guess to myself

Dalek104 August 28, 2006 4:06 AM

Wow, I can't wait for this! I bet it will be fantastic! Waiting...

Danny Stewart September 3, 2006 3:28 AM

I have some bad news for everyone... a recent power failure struck my house and did some permanent damage to my computer. My primary hard drive was destroyed along with my USB flash drive, which was where I kept all my original music project files. Unfortunately that means they're all gone -- not just for this mix, but all the music I've ever done. :(

I am working to rebuild the track, but as far as setbacks go, this is about as big as they get. :(

Alexus September 3, 2006 5:05 AM

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Danny Stewart September 4, 2006 1:03 AM

Yeah, as you can imagine, I was pretty upset too, considering weeks of work was just lost just like that. :(

Ben Dawson September 4, 2006 2:01 PM

Yeah, it can take forever to build up but just a second to destroy.

Recurring Villain September 5, 2006 5:12 AM

Sue the power company.

Get them to resequence it for you.

Danny Stewart September 10, 2006 9:12 PM

Excellent idea. I'll let you know how that goes. :P

Doodah September 27, 2006 2:20 PM

Awww... that really does stink doesn't it? :( Hows the reremix(es) :P coming? I got quite excited when I saw this thread as it was one of those "pieces of incidental music that you're never going to get anywhere that you really like" and I was disappointed to find it had been wiped out just like that when I got to the end of the thread :(.

Danny Stewart September 27, 2006 6:34 PM

Ah, no! I still have this one, luckily! I've reuploaded it and you can hear it here. :D

Mainly what was lost is the original project files I made that actually store the notes and instruments and everything like that. Most of the MP3 files I exported are still around.

Doodah September 28, 2006 9:47 AM

Woo lol... :D

Edit: I just assumed that it was referring to this tune as well as the link wasn't working so I assumed it wasn't uploaded to the internet and, therfore, destroyed with all your other files.

Danny Stewart September 28, 2006 10:26 AM

Did you hear it? If so, what did you think?

Doodah September 29, 2006 11:05 AM

Yeah its good, I enjoyed it, although I thought the vocal section- the tune, could have sounded more like voices... if thats possible... more of an "oooh" than an "aaah"... It's hard to describe... More like the background in your Face of Boe music...I loved the bassline however, and the drums... Hope I'm not being overly critical... :) Can I ask what you use to create these files? Software? A Synthesizer or Keyboard?
