"Face of Boe" music

The BBC has put Murray Gold's "Face of Boe" music from "New Earth" up on their front page for a limited time, so I grabbed a copy and made a quick recreation of it. This took me about half an hour the other night, and I thought I'd share it here. It's not very long, but I hope you all like it just the same. :)

Dalek104 September 23, 2006 6:06 PM

Danny, let me be the first to say, this is absolutely fantastic! :D It is a superb recreation and you should be very proud of it. To create something like this in just 30 minutes, wow! Congratualations, Danny! :)

Danny Stewart September 24, 2006 12:02 AM

Thank you very much. I'm so pleased you've enjoyed it! :D

Dalek104 September 24, 2006 8:33 AM

No problem, Danny! This just really is excellent. :)
And I like to make people happy. ;)

Nice, I'd been listening to this piece of music for the past couple of days on the Doctor Who homepage despite its poor quality and I was rather annoyed when it went. Great to find a high quality piece that I can save to my Hard Drive without having to worry about it disappearing any time soon. I'm new by the way so... Hello All! :D (apologies for the rather immature choice of username... I was rather stuck for names at the time as you can probably tell) ... Very nice work Danny!

Hello and welcome to the forums, Doodah! :) I hope you enjoy it here just as much as I do! Such a wonderful community! :D
I think your username is great! It shows such imagination.
Anyway, I'm glad you liked this wonderful peice of music and have a fantastic time here!

Hi there Doodah! Glad to hear you're enjoying my work, and it's good to have you with us. :D

Well I was bored yet again today so I bodged up my own midi version of the Face of Boe tune. Nowhere near as good as Danny's (heck I'm using midi software :P) but not bad considering it is only my second midi from scratch.

This is wonderful stuff, Doodah! Keep it up! :)

Ben Dawson October 29, 2006 2:02 PM

If you want Doodah, I could make an MP3 of your version, what I'll do is have the sounds automatically changed into MP3 sounds.

Doodah October 29, 2006 2:54 PM

Thanks that would be nice! Change the sounds to mp3 sounds? How do you do that then?

EDIT: Can you do it to this version Ben? I just made some minor changes to the timing of some notes and dynamics.

Ben Dawson October 29, 2006 5:10 PM

well, if I can download the MIDI files, then I can upload them to a floppy disk and play it on my electric piano, then I can hook up my Multi-Track Recorder to my electric piano and record it. The electric piano replaces the sounds with a more realistic sound.

Wow that MIDI stuff is really impressive Doodah (probably because I am 100% talentless with this, I tried to MIDI the Who theme once and it ended up sounding like Dominic Glynn). Keep up the work please, I enjoy listening to the stuff you come up with (first the Void music and then this).

Could you try a Cybermen theme MIDI next (Hell I know it's only about 8 notes :P. But I find this electronic music stuff really difficult and impressive!)

Danny Stewart October 29, 2006 8:30 PM

Doodah, I can make an MP3 out of it a little easier and more effectively than Ben. I have top-notch orchestra software at my disposal so I can take your notes and play them properly using a real recorded orchestra. Let me know if you're interested.

Doodah October 30, 2006 2:59 AM

Yes thanks Danny I am interested. You can both have a go if you really want to!

MI7 I have an odd hunch that the Cybermen theme will sound god awful with midi software, mainly because the electronic brass on my software doesn't sound at all like real brass but I could have a go anyway and see how it comes out.

Ben Dawson October 30, 2006 4:02 AM

yeah, lets both have a go. I know that you've got a whole army at your disposal on your computer music wise, but I like to find the alternate way in doing it.

Doodah October 30, 2006 5:39 AM

Well I've spent the last ten minutes bodging this tune up just for you MI7 :P . It sound's very bland and empty without any base because the part is a solo in the episode but here it is anyway. The Cyberman Theme: http://files.filefront.com/The_Cyber.../fileinfo.html

It's very short and I'm not happy with the key it's in but that can easily be tinkered with by transposing it which is a lovely tool because it means I don't have to write it all out again in a different key.

Ben Dawson October 30, 2006 5:42 AM

your Face of Boe mix is ready, I'll send it over now.

I got it, thanks! It all sounds a lot nicer now - less synthetic- especially the voices! I don't s'pose there's any chance in you having a go at doing my Sealing the Void rendition? :P

Here's Ben's mp3 if anyone is interested.

Ben Dawson October 30, 2006 6:54 AM

I'll give it a shot.

Danny Stewart October 30, 2006 3:49 PM

Hopefully I'll be able to get to it within the next day or two. I apologize for the delay but I'll be busy for a while right now.

Doodah October 31, 2006 9:05 AM

No problem Danny. In the meantime, if you have read the Sealing the Void thread you will have realised that my midi output is probably different to yours. Thus I am getting a different sound to you so for all I know your midi could sound totally, horrifically different to what I intended it to be. Here is a wav of MY version which I hear.

Danny Stewart October 31, 2006 9:26 PM

You're right, that's a lot better -- which exactly says why you shouldn't do MIDI files! :P
