Doctor Who 3x02 - "The Shakespeare Code"

Plot Summary
The Doctor and Martha travel to Elizabethan England, where the famous playwright William Shakespeare is being controlled by three witches called Carrionites. The Doctor and Martha must stop the evil witches, and Shakespeare must give the performance of his life in order to save history.

Excellent episode! I don't know if it was just being able to watch it on its first transmission or the quality of the episode itself, but whatever it was, I couldn't stop smiling the whole way through the episode for some reason. I thought it was great! Very enjoyable episode, and a solid 9/10 from me. :)

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 2:09 PM

That's got to be the best episode of all of the last 3 series. I'm a big fan of Shakespeare so hearing his use of language really had me gripped. Best episode I've seen in a long time. And the past 2 episodes have been a great kick-off to the series. Brilliant acting from all the actors, and a well replicated Globe theatre as well, 10/10 :D

I'm watching Doctor Who Confidential right now -- that was no replicated Globe Theatre! That was the real thing! Somehow RTD and co. got permission to film there, so that's the genuine article.

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 2:18 PM

Ah right, I was going to say "yo, big up, respect" to the set builders, but never mind, I still loved the episode. Your resident "Who" cynic has been wowed :P

Hurrah! :D

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 2:22 PM

I'm wondering if this year, there will be an episode whereby the entire forums are split in half, right down the middle, with half of us screaming obscenities, and the others forming a wall holding shields out in protection, ala "Love and Monsters" last year :P

Danny Stewart April 7, 2007 2:23 PM

There is supposed to be a Doctor-lite episode this year. It's called "Blink" and it's written by Steven Moffat. It's episode ten. If there will be one like that this series, that may well be it. Although the fact that it's written by Steven Moffat makes me worry a lot less.

I <3 Steven Moffat.

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 2:24 PM

Well if Moffat wrote it, it can't be bad, can it?

That's my hope. Moffat has written the most brilliant episodes so far in new Doctor Who, so I'm hoping he'll make something excellent out of the Doctor-lite episode this year (unlike how RTD made a travesty of it last year).

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 2:37 PM

What else has he written, I can't remember.

Ross Hendrie April 7, 2007 3:03 PM

That was an excellent episode. I wasnt expecting much based on the preview to be honest, but I really did enjoy it. That part at the end was good aswell, when the Queen tried to have the Doctor killed lol. I hope that is revisited in a future ep.

Though, if the Doctor is an enemy of the crown, surely Queen Victoria would've recognised his name when they met last series. But well... I wont rant on. :P

Good episode. 9/10.

And Love and Monsters rocked, btw. :D

Dalek104 April 7, 2007 3:25 PM

I found Love and Monsters to be my least favourite episode of Series 2.

Danny Stewart April 7, 2007 3:30 PM

I found Love and Monsters to be the most shameful abomination to ever bear the Doctor Who name. :(

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 3:33 PM

Let's not get started on this again :P

Ross Hendrie April 7, 2007 3:40 PM

Well, whatever, whatever. I liked it.

I was gonna say! ;)

7/10 for me. I'm not gonna get overly excited about the early episodes. :P

That said, I did like the witty one liners. Martha is brilliant. I was skeptical about her characteristics at first but she's a great addition to the series. Freema Agyeman makes Martha extremely believaable too. Good stuff from her. :)

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 4:48 PM

Martha is excellent, she's so much better than Rose. Rose was just too clingy, and too soppy. Rose just didn't work. Rose... Won't do...

I completely agree. Martha actually asks sensible questions and her accent isnt annoying. Plus she doesnt run around shouting "Doctor" all the time and then going all suicidal when he was "dead", which I found quite annoying.

Ronnie Rowlands April 7, 2007 5:02 PM

That didn't stop you from drooling all over her photographs on here a year
ago:P

Ross Hendrie April 7, 2007 5:12 PM

The character was annoying, that's all. :P

That's no reason to give it a lower rating! If they put a good episode at the beginning of the season then you should still rate it well.

Agreed. I love Freema Agyeman, and I love Martha Jones. I loved her after Smith and Jones, and I love her even more now. I definitely think she beats out Rose even, just from what we've seen so far. This series is going to be awesome.

Just because the character got a bit soppy at points doesn't mean Billie Piper's not still a babe! Phwoar! :P

Ronnie Rowlands April 8, 2007 5:23 AM

Just look at the shape of her face man! She looks like a mutant!

Hey, if you don't like her, that's fine with me -- more left for the rest of us!

*sigh* Oh, Danny...

Danny Stewart April 8, 2007 9:20 AM

You all started it. The blame lies with you all.

Ronnie Rowlands April 8, 2007 10:41 AM

Still a bit "leisure hive" isn't it?

Danny Stewart April 8, 2007 10:56 AM

There is no Leisure Hive on here, so anything's fair game. :P

Hamster April 10, 2007 7:14 PM

Not bad, this week - very enjoyable. The Shakespeare quotes I could see coming a long way off. A week off in fact. Still, some great performances, good storyline and very impressive from a technical standpoint. However, I think if the writers want to create the kind of sexual chemistry they're clearly aiming for, they could perhaps make a bit more of an effort and try for something far more subtle than sticking them in the same bed. I know it was nothing untoward, but it just seems like a cheap and lazy way of doing it. End pretentious mode. ;)

Marinedalek April 11, 2007 5:18 AM

I think the intention was to show that there was no sexual chemistry. Martha clearly thought something might happen but the Doctor hardly seemed to notice her. Back to the JN-T days of no hanky-panky for a bit now I think :P

Agreed, hopefully.

Smut has no place in Doc Who!

Exactly Pete's point. Did you read?

Ronnie Rowlands April 12, 2007 1:18 PM

Yes. And I was agreeing with him, sillly :P

Ben Dawson April 12, 2007 2:38 PM

It was a brilliant episode, I'm looking forward to next weeks.

Ronnie Rowlands April 12, 2007 2:39 PM
