Remastered Murray Gold themes

I have just finished work remastering Murray Gold's series one and series two closing themes. I have done significant work to make them hopefully sound as good as possible.

I first tackled the series two theme, as I felt inspired to do so after Sontaran's attempt. I think this one came out very well. The highs are crisp and clear and the lows are nice and bassy. You can download the series two theme here.

While I was at it, I decided to also give the series one theme a try. For this, I used similar techniques as I did for the series two theme, except less pronounced (the series one theme seemed to need less mastering to begin with). In addition to this, I felt obligated to correct Murray Gold's psychotic choppy Derbyshire bassline which appears and disappears at random points throughout the theme. There is now a consistent, clear Derbyshire bassline throughout this version. You can download the series one theme here.

I hope you enjoy these! :)

Very good! :) I listened to these with my headphones on, and they're great. I was especially fond of the closing hiss in the series one closing. You did a great job!

Danny Stewart April 18, 2007 8:14 PM

Thank you very much! :D

Dalek104 April 19, 2007 10:39 AM

Wow, these are incredible. Thanks for sharing, Danny! :D

Danny Stewart April 19, 2007 11:39 AM

Thanks. :D

Ben Dawson April 20, 2007 11:28 AM

Really nice work, good work with the bassline on the season one closing.

Danny Stewart April 20, 2007 11:30 AM

Thanks, Ben. I'm proud of how well it blended with Murray's. :)

Ben Dawson April 21, 2007 11:37 AM

I bet you are, it blends in perfectly, sounds very authentic.

Sontaran Of Brunei May 8, 2007 12:59 PM

Great work as always Danny - glad I inspired you! :D

Could you possibly give the CIN orchestral theme the same treatment please?

Ben Dawson May 8, 2007 1:23 PM

I think he did at one point.

Danny Stewart May 8, 2007 1:46 PM

I did, but not on its own. It received remastering treatment when I merged it with the isolated Derbyshire elements. I could try and remaster it on its own if you like.

Ben Dawson May 8, 2007 1:56 PM

That would be brilliant.

Sontaran Of Brunei May 8, 2007 5:19 PM

Yes please Danny :)

Danny Stewart May 8, 2007 5:25 PM

I'll take a look at it and see what needs to be done.

roseNmartha June 3, 2007 5:47 AM

Brilliant work. Well done

Danny Stewart June 3, 2007 12:35 PM

Thank you very much!

Everyone's doing a great job with the themes, remastered, original or otherwise.

Danny, have you considered contributing your original theme remixes (especially the "Fool's Gold" theme) to WhoMix ( http://whomix.trilete.net/ )?
I think it would be a big hit there as well.
(Anything that improves on Murray Gold is apparently very popular over there.) :)

Danny Stewart June 17, 2007 5:34 PM

Thanks very much. I have considered posting Fool's Gold to Whomix... it's just a matter of putting together that "final" final version that everyone's happy with. I'm pretty happy with it as it stands now, and Murray seems to like it well enough. I'm just going to run it by Dom now and see what he thinks of it before I call it done.

Ronnie Rowlands June 20, 2007 12:10 PM

Upload it to the Whomix Danny, then wait a year for it to appear :P

Superkid11 June 20, 2007 12:55 PM

You really should, they'd go wild. :P

You know I'm friends with Pete, who's a co-admin, right? If I sent it in it would be up within a day.

Ben Dawson June 20, 2007 3:31 PM

Yep, Whomix and DS.com are pretty tied together, any music maker who remixes the theme and is a member here can count on it being up soon after ;).

Superkid11 June 20, 2007 3:48 PM

I've wanted to try it but I don't think I should be getting into music production given my ideal career choice at the moment. :P That and I have the musical talent of an elephant. (I can listen to music and see a visual scene where it would fit, and vice versa, but I have a feeling if I got something like one of the programs Danny told me about I'd be totally clueless and would wind up producing something akin to an untrained chimpanzee playing the piano.)
Still, that's good to know...

You couldn't do worse than Keff McCulloch, and he got a job on Doctor Who!

Sontaran Of Brunei June 21, 2007 1:03 PM

Any progress with the remastered CIN concert theme please?

Danny Stewart June 21, 2007 3:07 PM

Now, now, no need to be impatient.

Superkid11 June 21, 2007 3:42 PM

All right! :) I'd never heard the thing by itself til now.

Would you describe the remastering process as difficult, fun, or tedious? :P

Danny Stewart June 21, 2007 3:46 PM

Series 1 - Fun (because I fixed the missing Derbyshire bassline sections)
Series 2 - Difficult (first one I did, so I had to figure out exactly what I was doing)
CIN - Tedious (because I was being pressured to do it by outside sources :P)
