The Master: Derek Jacobi or John Simm?
I saw a thread on OG that asked whether people preferred Derek Jacobi or John Simm as the Master just based on what we saw in "Utopia." I have to say, it's a damn good question. I liked Simm but Jacobi was just brilliant -- every line he uttered oozed "Master" and I certainly wouldn't have minded him staying. Was a bit depressed when he regenerated into John Simm.
|
Jacobi was excellent but I do prefer Simm because of his Master's eccentric and silly but still evil attitude. :P
As I said before, Jacobi was great as an old Master, but Simm is a great young Master. |
Respectfully speaking, we have hardly seen John Simm, so i feel this is premature :) If you understand, I will post my opinion after this weeks episode. Although Derek Jacobi did set a very good standard to catch. But I feel comparisons are just too soon until an equal chance develops, last week was about Derek Jacobi, this will will be about John Simm, so lock and load :)
|
Chris, you're missing the point of the poll. The entire idea is just to judge them on what we saw in "Utopia" -- it even says so in the poll question.
|
I read an article by RTD. The whole point of casting John Simm as The Master was to strike a balance between him and DT. DT's Doctor has so much energy that they felt it was only fair to give him a Master with similar qualities......and a bigger sonic screwdriver. :D

As great as Jacobi's performance was, I'd have to go for John Simm. It's nice to see some good old-fashioned evil glee onscreen.

We're still winning. :P

methinks John Simm will be good. We need a funny master again, like Roger Delgado was. scene in The Sea Devils when he is watching TV, hilarious
|
I loved Jacobi, but I loved the look of the "young" Master, true, "old" was more sinister in personality, but "young" seemed to stroll by without a care, which I find even more sinister. So it's John Simm for me.

Clearly I will have to skew the poll. :P
|
Clearly a Cyberman will have to introduce your under-the-belt zone to its foot if you do. :P
... wait, I take that back. That may hurt more than neccesary. |
Derek Jacobi at the moment mind you. But after todays episode i recommend we redo the poll and start again :)
|
No, that's not fair, because Jacobi won't be in that one so there's nothing new to compare!
|
"Based on what you have seen from the last two eps....."
|
Exactly Danny, Jacobi had this episode to himself, and todays will show us what john simm can do, then we can do a proper comparison ;) They would have had more or less equal amounts of time then

Exactly. That's an excellent point, James -- both Derek Jacobi and John Simm each played the Master for only about five minutes in Utopia, which makes it the perfect comparison episode!
|
I'm really confused now :( 5 minutes, more like 40. Simm having slightly more due to episode 12. now you both have confused me, and im panicking :( I really can't figure this out now.
Honestly, sometimes when I say something and it is disagreed with, it sounds like im being given a scathing harsh attack. When i compliment something, it's hardly noticed. Sometimes I feel like the invisible man around here, and I like to feel im safe around here. :( Sometimes I really can;t understand why some people act, I get confused, and it does not help me to settle. |
Jacobi played Professor Yana for most of the episode, but played the Master for about five minutes after he opened the fob watch. Then he regenerated into John Simm's Master, who was seen for the further five minutes or so of the episode. That makes a fair comparison of which Master you preferred -- they each had five minutes of the episode to appear in.
And don't worry, you're not being attacked, you're not invisible and you are noticed. ;) |
I'm surprised you didn't understand that, Chris. James explained it well above -- Jacobi was only the Master for about five minutes -- the same as John Simm. Before that, he was Professor Yana.

<slaps head> I feel like the world biggest fool. :( Danny, im really sorry, I took what he said too literally again. Sorry, even after finishing school it's been hard, I have had to return books, had a leavers ball, was in London today and I need to go to a Uni meeting at Bath tomorrow. I understand what you both meant now. I guess i saw Derek Jacobi's performance was just so good. I really was immersed by his whole performance. John Simm's as well, I now understand what you mean.
What im going to do on Monday night is get an early sleep and a nice lie in, and get my head in gear. I don't mean to take this out on you, it;s been a hard year. |

No worries, Chris.

My holiday in Cyprus is coming up soon, that will help, I need to engage other ways to keep my stress free. So no more taking things out on you guys. I'm hoping the start of the Uni year might make things a bit easier going.
Thanks for the compliment Ronn :) i did do some poetry in GCSE :P |
Stress relief at uni should be simple, head to the union and order up a pint. :D
|
Wise words, and so true, maybe we should give me my own drunken forum just in case ;)
Back on topic, The Doctor said he wanted to save The Master, so maybe we will need to compare a 3rd actor in a few years. |
