Chris Britton February 16, 2008 6:58 PM

Ronnie Rowlands February 17, 2008 10:22 AM

Now- You must die.

Chris Britton February 17, 2008 10:53 AM

ROFL! Best thing said all day.

Danny Stewart February 17, 2008 2:37 PM

I have no sympathy for people who drink. Or people who smoke. Or do drugs of any kind.

I agree. I think if you are stupid enough to do that sort of thing to yourself; all drugs make you feel good in the short term but worse in the long term, and when it eventually ****s you up, you've only brought it on yourself.

Marinedalek February 17, 2008 3:25 PM

But... but... I drink. Well... 2 pints of 50/50 shandy isn't exactly 15 pints followed by a bottle of vodka but still... :P

Well I don't do it around the clock you know. In fact it's extremely rare I do get drunk, last night was because it's my birthday in a week and there was a party on last night to celebrate it. As next weekend i'm not about. Mainly because on Friday and Saturday I am up in Manchester with my girlfriend to visit her parents, then mine are coming to to see me at Uni on Sunday. I hate smoking ands drug of any kind.

Yeah, but you do take Alcohol. A panel of experts judged that if Alcohol was introduced today, it would be illegalised and be a Class A drug.

Ronnie Rowlands February 17, 2008 4:40 PM

I fail to see how that would be possible. And I have no problem with smoking. I love the smell of second hand smoke.

Superkid11 February 17, 2008 7:25 PM

My dad used to smoke and paid for it, he managed to quit...

I do have a character that drinks so much she had to get a cybernetic liver by the protagonist. Drunk people are fun to make fun of. :P

I like smokers because they give me people to add to my long list of 'people to whom RV is superior'.

It's just a pity they don't tax cigarettes more. The idiots would pay whatever price the cigarettes' cost, so we could effectively lessen things like income taxes and put the burden on people determined to kill themselves through prolonged smoke inhalation.

The same with things like pot, alcohol, cocaine, meth, religion, etc. I call it the 'idiot tax'. These people **** up their bodies and minds and die, and we get huge subsidies on cool things like games consoles or TVs because they're paying such massive taxes on the products they choose to kill themselves with and are so addicted to they can't find any possible way to stop.

This is one reason the world would be a better place with RV in charge.

Yeah, because there is a BARRAGE of evidence that there are health risks from second hand smoke.

Wrong.

Second-hand smoking causing diseases is trash. Everyone really knows it.

There are 41 different causes of cancer. One being smoking. Shift-work is another. And stress, diet, alcohol, etc.

P Smoking research only takes 4-5 of these causes into account, so it is junk science. For every one of these studies showing a link, six more do not.

Even though the amount of smokers has halved in the last 30 years, lung cancer rates have gone up 800%? And have asthma, heart disease, etc etc - all diseases blamed on smoking. Smoking is no good for you definitely - but there is NO risk from second-hand smoking and everyone knows it!!!

And Danny, what do you think gives you the right to wish lung cancer on ANYBODY? I just lost a hell of a lot of respect for you.

Oh and RV, Last time I heard, smoking-related diseases cost the NHS £1.7 billon and cigarette tax brought in around £7.5 billion. It's the same people who want smoking banned that are being treated in hospitals FREE OF CHARGE.

Correct.

"Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 46,000 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at work are at increased risk for adverse health effects. Levels of ETS in restaurants and bars were found to be 2 to 5 times higher than in residences with smokers and 2 to 6 times higher than in office workplaces."

"Secondhand smoke immediately affects the heart and blood circulation in a harmful way. It also causes heart disease and lung cancer."

"Secondhand smoke exposure causes heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults."

"Inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in nonsmoking adults."

Just as I hold no respect for people who think smoking is cool.

tardis2008 February 18, 2008 12:10 PM

Remind me never to argue with you Danny. Thats what i call research ;) At least with the smoking ban in public places in force in the UK its not as bad as it used to be. The Government seem to have made drink public enemy number one again now smoking's sorted....Wonder whats next?

Ronnie Rowlands February 18, 2008 12:30 PM

It's good enough to say. Who wrote those articles, anti-smokers? There's no real proof that their effects are caused by second hand smoke, is there? Why do you think you have the right to tell someone to get lung cancer?

I disagree with the experts on horizon rating nicotine higher than several other things like ecstacy and cannabis. Smoking is worse than alcohol, that shouldn't be argued with. Smoking doesn't have the capabilities
to make one more violent or louder than normal. It wouldn't give one the urge to get into a fight, get themselves into trouble, and people don't tend to sell their dearest possessions to afford another cigarette.

All people who eat sweets, Danny, do you hope they become obese and die of a heart attack?

Smoking is NOT sorted. It was not a big social problem that was causing people to go commit crime. Take cigarettes away from people, and you get a black market, people will just start smuggling them in and the government will get NO tax off them then, will they? They won't be happy then will they?

In order:
  • The American Lung Association
  • The American Cancer Society
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • The National Cancer Institute
  • FOX News
  • The National Library of Medicine (part of the National Institutes of Health)
I trust each and every one of those sources (with the exception of FOX News) significantly more than I trust your judgment.

But with regard to FOX News, as Martok once said on Star Trek, "There's nothing more convincing than an ally and an enemy both telling you the same thing."

Same for us, I'm not wishing a very serious disease on you. Although I think Danny was aiming it at me personally, not every smoker in the world. I'm sure he would not have directed the same courtesy to Dorie or someone else dear to him. Even so, it is not very nice to just shrug off people dying with a "well he deserved it" mentality. It's a very ignorant stance and one should not make comments like that unless they themselves have been in that position.

Do not bring Dorie into this. This is your first and last warning. If you so much as mention her name again, you will be banned from this site permanently.

Ronnie Rowlands February 18, 2008 3:49 PM

I was not bringing her into anything, I was using her as an example. Yes I knew that would get some sort of reaction from you, sadly it was not the counter to my argument I was hoping for, just a threat. Alright then, just replace her name with anyone else important to you.

EVERY adult member of my family has smoked at one point. Some have given up, some are still at it. Would you wish this disease on them as well? Supposing they all did. Put yourself in my shoes after that happened, and see if you could say "yeah well, they deserved it."

Chris Britton February 18, 2008 4:18 PM

Ronn, all members of my dads side of the family apart from him smoked, and as a result my Grandad had a heart attack and now has a pacemaker, and is very frail, my Nan had to give up to help fund his treatment, my uncle has smokers breath, my aunt has to make sure she wears make up because of the state of her skin. All because they kept puffing away. Now they are my family as I love them like family, but to see whats happened to them is heartbreaking.

My Grandad had his heart attack two years after my other one died of an Asthma attack even though he did not smoke, i was very distressed, and on a simple conicidence my dad and mum have the ONLY successful marrage in our current family, 23 years this year.

I'm not wishng a disease on you as well Ronn, and despite our fallings out I don't want more arguments between us as there have been too many.

... and by doing so, you brought her into this. You dropped her name into a line of discussion that had absolutely nothing to do with her and in which she was not involved prior to you mentioning her. That is bringing her into this, and it was a huge mistake.

It doesn't work like that. I don't want you under any circumstances name-dropping or talking about people who I care about and using their names as examples in a stupid argument in which you are fighting on the wrong side. You ever try anything like that again and you'll be out of here so fast you won't know what hit you.

Well, you're right. I would not wish for them to get lung cancer.

However if they did, you're damn right I would say they deserved it. Because guess what. They did. They chose to pollute their bodies with poison. That's what happens when you make such an idiotic choice. You pay for it. As I've said numerous times in this thread, I have zero sympathy for people like that. They bring it upon themselves 100%.

Superkid11 February 18, 2008 6:13 PM

I think it would be healthy to drop this line of discussion right about now.

When internet drama stops being funny chances are it's going to lead to an explosion.

Marinedalek February 18, 2008 7:25 PM

I see that since Ronnie has clearly lost the original argument he's now moved the goalposts so that we're arguing about something else. Entertaining as this thread has been, I think it's run its course in terms of sensibility.
