DSF: What does this site mean to you?

In scaling back the forums, I am forced to think about some things that I haven't considered in a long time. One of the things I am thinking about is moving the forums to a new domain. Having them be attached to my name is liberating in one way, because it allows me to focus on what interests me, even with little justification provided for wildly different topics. But the downside is that it doesn't really pinpoint the focus of the site specifically enough, which is something I would like to do.

What do the forums mean to you? What's the main thing you come here for, beyond just the sense of community? What aspects of this site appeal to you the most? Most importantly, if we were to move the forums to an entirely new domain name, what would the focus of the new site be, and what are some possible choices for a new domain name?

I discussed this briefly with RV, and he suggested that perhaps the main focus of the site was the Doctor Who theme, as well as other music and audio interests. If that is the case, I already own the DWtheme.com domain -- how would you feel about moving the site there? Or if you disagree that that is the focus of the site, please post and let me know your thoughts on the issue so I can get a feel for what's in store for the site's future.

Thanks very much!

I mostly hang around here because I'm the only person I know in RL who even knows what Doctor Who is, so it's nice to have people to talk about the whole 'Whoverse' with.

It's also good because this has been a small community, which is pretty tight-nit, which means it's been pretty good because there isn't that constant flow of newtards clogging up the forum.

Oh, and I guess it's my resident trolling grounds. :P

How specific a focus you want the site to have is directly linked to how ambitious your goals for the site are.

Superkid11 February 24, 2008 11:55 PM

It's difficult to say. The first time I joined here it was to discuss Doctor Who and its various themeular triumphs. But then I got attracted to just the group here. It's nice.

This is one of four groups of online friends I have and currently the most actively talking group... one is nearly dead and I'm horridly inactive on the other one. The other is a Runescape clan website and I'm not too familiar with everybody there yet.

So it's nice hanging around here even if I don't get in the chat room. :) I'm not sure what focus the site should have.

What do we talk about the most, really?

EDIT: Lawl 666 posts.

+1 for Doctor Who.

I don't have any lofty ambitions, really. I want to get the site a little more focused and a little more driven. I think a major refresh will help to move it along, help it mature somewhat. Attracting new non-n00b members would be nice, but I'm not too bothered by that. I like the community that we have, and that's one of the reasons I'm so proud of this site.

+1 for community.

Here you go. Does this help? Of note here are the Hottest Threads and Most Popular Forums sections, I think.

http://img.skitch.com/20080225-ram73...j6yctqg3nc.png

Based on your thoughts, my own thoughts, and looking at the stats, I'd say it's not the smartest move to push this site further into Doctor Who (theme) territory than it already is. Looks like what we're really about is the community. I think DWtheme.com is out, then. Any other ideas to throw out there?

Informal tally:
Doctor Who: 2 votes.
Doctor Who theme: 1 vote.
Community: 5 votes.

dannystardis.com?

lulz. I think not. I want something with a slightly more generic appeal. RV has (or is associated with) something called Resonance Cascade. I want something like that.

Here's some completely random ones I'm coming up with right now, as I type: The Edge of Beyond, Infinite Unknown... yeah, that's it. Both of those pretty much suck, but it shows the kind of general-appeal name I'm after.

Superkid11 February 25, 2008 12:38 AM

The Time-Space Conundrum?

I like it! TSC has a great ring to it. :D

Keep them coming though. Choice is always good.

Superkid11 February 25, 2008 12:45 AM

Hehe, careful now, you're getting my gears turning. Stuff happens when that happens. >:3

The Vacuum of Speech?

The Forums at the End of the Universe?
(crap, nevermind, just googled it and somebody else has a forum set up with that name... no domain of its own though.)

Hairy Cheese?

... clearly I can't think of anything better than Time-Space Conundrum at the moment. :P

Yeah, I own RC (for the uninformed, the resonance cascade is the event that starts the Black Mesa incident in Half Life. Geek pride represent.).

"Waned Tyrants", an anagram of Danny Stewart... :P

What about, "SatanWorshippingAtheists.com" or "FoxNewsRocks.com"?

Clearly. :P

What would our domain be, assuming we went with Time-Space Conundrum? I've just checked and pretty much everything "tsc" is already taken; "timespaceconundrum" on the other hand is almost universally available, but it's a bit of a mouthful. I'd like a domain name shorter than DannyStewart.com if possible.

Naturally, I was aware of this, but I appreciate you explaining it to the uninitiated. :P

That actually appeals to part of me. Not a very big part, mind you, but the part that likes it likes it a lot. :P

Hmm... I think we're getting away from the general idea here... :P

Superkid11 February 25, 2008 12:50 AM

"tispcon" or "tspacec"... maybe "tsconundrum"?

Tsconundrum brings up absolutely nothing on Google. It may not be shorter than DannyStewart but it seems like it would work fine.

timespace.ws is available. What do you think of that?

tsconundrum is also pretty much universally available.

I've never heard of a ".ws"... I'm not so sure about it. It's my instinct to avoid sites that show up with strange .s like that, it's unnerving. Though that wouldn't keep me from coming here obviously; it's just a nitpick of mine.

... even if we're not going to use this site one of you must buy rocketlawnchairs.com. It wins too hard to let it go any longer.

.ws has been around for a while. I believe it stands for "web site."

Done. I'll buy it right now.

EDIT: Ordered.

Superkid11 February 25, 2008 1:10 AM

Well, if you do prefer it to tsconundrum.com/net/org/wtf then it's all good. :P

Danny Stewart February 25, 2008 1:10 AM

I don't -- not for this site, at least. But you're right, it wins too hard to let it slip by.

Oh, ok. Well, good luck deciding what to use, as I've been up so late my ability to do algebra tomorrow may have taken a hit. :P

I actually think it would be a great name for the new site. Easy to spell, memorable, and amusing :P

I've been wanting to do something with 'Rocket Lawnchairs' for a while, I was thinking of using it as an artist pseudonym. I'm surprised that it isn't taken.

But think about it; "normal" people sit on the beach or lawn or whatever in lawnchairs, awesome people (ie. netizens) sit in rocket lawnchairs due to awesome. Therefore we can conclude that a site assosiated with rocket lawnchairs would be awesome and epic.

No matter what happens and whatever becomes of the site i intend to stick around. the forums have always been a place i can come to for whatever reason for the past 3 years. I've made some good friends and and got so many memories that I'm ready to support any move and change. I remember when at first the place was just for some guys who liked Star Trek, then it was just 4 friends who talked about anything, and now it's a huge society which has branched into almost anything. :D it's always been there whatever the time of day, whatever the weather, it's been so consistent and a big presence in my life.

So make whatever choices you need to Danny, as I shall be there and looking forward to them :)

DOCTOR WHO MUSIC!

What DSF means to me: Doctor Who, Doctor Who Music, Community, Friendly Sing-song, Chats, Randomness, RV's Hitlerporn, Danny's Innumerable Fools Gold remixes and making fun of Keff and Murray.
