Star Trek

So... new Star Trek movie.

It was pretty awesome.

Mister_Wilbur May 12, 2009 5:52 PM

T'was a shiny movie! 5 out of 5.

Jamie Minty May 13, 2009 12:51 PM

Good actors, good director, good story! Look forward to more. The spock story was good. Sylar makes a great Spock!

JJ Abrams: What do the kids like these days?

Intern: Gee, I don't know, let me check the internet.

* 5 Minutes Later *

Intern: Well, I've checked the internet.

JJ: And?

Intern: I've ascertained that the kids are into lense flares.

JJ: Lense flares?

Intern: According to the internet, lense flares are all the rage.

JJ: Excellent, get me a copy of photoshop. This is going to be the best movie ever.

Danny Stewart May 14, 2009 1:41 PM

He admits he overdid it with the lens flares. It was a bit much in places but overall not as bad as I feared. And it was a good movie.

Ross Hendrie May 18, 2009 7:23 AM

Started brilliantly, however the whole alternate future thing got a bit weird. Overall though, it was a step in the right direction to reviving Star Trek.

It made pretty much perfect sense. You're lucky we got a writing team who bothered to explain the changes at all.

Um, it wasn't a step, it was the revival of Star Trek. :P

I'm not saying it was poorly explained, I'm just saying it was weird that they decided to destroy Vulcan.

It didn't sound like that's what you were trying to say. :P

Though I agree. That was a bold move.

Chris Britton May 21, 2009 4:41 PM

Great film, great acting, great pacing and a wonderful storyline, pretty much the best thing we have seen from Star Trek since they did First Contact, and DS9 ;)

That said destroying Vulcan took a lot of balls, and they pulled it off and was a delight to see Nemoy back for a final hurrah too.

Also happy with the alternative universe idea, thankfully 40 years of cannon has not been erased and now the actors are not bound by all that cannon to restrict their roles, which was what made Watchmen suffer.

Danny Stewart May 21, 2009 11:44 PM

Well said, Chris.

Thanks, it's given me a chance to get back into Star Trek and as a result I have started to get DS9 on DVD, probably my least watched series from the TNG era but ranks as one of my favorites.

Also, it's been confirmed that the guy who played Kirk's dad in the film has been cast as Thor in the upcoming film about the Marvel Comics hero.

One thing I forgot to say: the skirts were longer. :(

You're lucky they kept them. :P

I am not an avid Star Trek follower but after seeing the film, I just thought it was utterly brilliant. The acting was top notch so was the directing. Some of the in jokes I didn't quite get yet but that is because I am not a follower.

Everything just seemed to be so seamless. However the aleternate reality story running throughout it to be honest gave me a bit of a headache. Overall I thought it was just a brilliant film and I think I am a Star Trek convert.

You sure you just weren't sitting too close to the screen?

I'm not really sure getting new fans who liked the film to go back and watch the series is a good idea, in all honesty.

The film actually makes Star Trek seem cool.

Dude, what the fuck. Deep Space Nine was amazing. You don't want people going back to, say, Voyager, but DS9 is totally safe.

Anything from DS9 and before is completely safe, with the exception of Star Trek V and some episodes from TNG Series 1 and 2.

As for Voyager, it didn't fall as low as Enterprise but it was a sign of things to come. At the very least wait until you have watched everything prior to it. Just don't watch Threshold.

I do agree that Seasons 3 and 4 were a vast improvement, Manny Coto was excellent, The gap in quality from the episodes he penned from the ones Berma and Braga did was clear. Terra Prime and These Are The Voyages... being examples.

Sort of agree with Ross on this. I never liked Trek 'cause it seemed dorky as hell.

Still haven't seen the movie 'cause I don't know anyone who cares enough about it to go with me, haha. Saw Terminator 4 last week, though. :D

Danny Stewart June 10, 2009 5:23 AM

See the movie, then see DS9. The rest of Trek likely won't appeal to you.

You're not really allowed to agree with Ross, because Ross speaks as a lifelong Star Trek fan whereas you've barely seen a handful of episodes.

And all this time I thought I disagreed with most things he said because they were retarded. I had no idea there was a rule against it.

Ross doesn't think Star Trek is cool despite being a fan. /facepalm

Seen that too and thought It was good. Not at the same level as T1 and T2 but still an improvement over T3. I don't get why the press hated it, but another reason to ignore them.

Even I knew this...

Oh, and Terminator 4 wasn't great, just decent.

It had great actors leaking out of the kazoo, ILM doing some of their most impressive work, Danny Elfman scoring and even some pretty impressive direction from McG, but in the end, the whole movie was ruined because they didn't bother to get anyone better to script that shit. Not even Jonathan Nolan could save that nigga.

Seriously, get new writers McG.

Dr. Videoman June 22, 2009 10:39 PM

Awesome movie. I went to see it with my friends
