Brief downtime

I would like to apologize to those members that noticed the brief downtime today. I was in the process of updating the forums to a newer version (which happens fairly routinely), except my FTP client cut out in the middle of the transfer which broke some things around the forums. Rather than risk screwing things up further, I elected to turn off the forums for a few minutes while I reuploaded the files and upgraded like normal. (Usually I can do these things under the radar, and downtime is less than 30 seconds in total, which is why I don't mind doing it in the middle of the day even when there are people on. No one ever notices, and even if someone does, usually by the time they reload the affected page it's all back on.) This time though it just didn't work out like normal. Oh well...

Still, the update has completed normally and we're again running the latest version. Everything should be working fine now, but as always, if you have any problems, please let me know. Thank you!

now gives him an atomic wedgie...

Jez November 23, 2006 3:17 PM

What's that, being hit in the crotch (in an upwards direction) by a plutonium rod? I gotta try that on someone next time I have my hands on one. What isotope is it, or doesn't it matter? :D

Was it your FTP software itself, or just your connection, Danny?

My connection. Internet here has ups and downs for some reason, sometimes quite radical. Some days, usually late in the day, internet will drop down to an unmanageably slow speed and I can't figure out why. When I wake up the next morning it's resolved itself. Maybe a defective piece of hardware around the house...

Ben Dawson November 23, 2006 3:30 PM

an "Atomic Wedgie" is when the elastic actually goes over the persons head, it hurts I think, luckily, it's the internet so no harm can be done, it probably wont be so bad for Danny seeing as the connections slow, so he'll be able to run away quickly before I get the chance to do anything.

Ah, I have a similar problem. It's more likely due to the actual line, as well as demand from other users to use that line (unless it's dedicated, which isn't likely as you're not a business - although you Americans never cease to amaze me :P).

My connection is fine during the day but from 6pm onwards, although it works, it will disconnect randomly. It's (apparently) due to the demand from other users on my 20 odd house hamlet and, because we live deep in the country, BT can't be arsed to pull their fingers out and fix it. That's why I can't play online games over the net during the week. But I get by.

As for Atomic Wedgie - it's definition has officially been changed by me. :)

Danny Stewart November 23, 2006 3:46 PM

Yes, well it's very annoying as of late.

Ross Hendrie November 24, 2006 12:12 PM

LOL Danny, isn't your house a bit overcrowded with wires?

Danny Stewart November 24, 2006 12:26 PM

Who, me? :P

Ross Hendrie November 24, 2006 5:40 PM

Yeah.

Also... has anyone else noticed that the arcade etc. has all disappeared?

Danny Stewart November 24, 2006 5:47 PM

Ross, I posted this in the other thread. It's not gone, the link has just moved. Click on Quick Links up in the navbar at the top and you'll see the Chat Room and the Arcade all listed in there.

Ross Hendrie November 25, 2006 8:37 AM

Oh, I didnt see that.

Danny Stewart November 25, 2006 11:00 AM

No worries. :)
