Wii

Well, I think I may be succumbing to the dark side and moving into the world of console gaming. If I do (and I stress the if, because it's still not definite as yet), I'm thinking that I'm going to go with a Wii, for a couple of different reasons. First, the price is right -- it's only $250, and my family definitely can't afford any more than that. Second, the controllers -- they're a new and unique approach to gaming, and it looks insanely fun to play like that. Third, unlike past Nintendo consoles (as per my understanding, at least), it looks like a much wider variety of games will be available for it to take advantage of all it has to offer.

Does anyone have any comments for me before I decide whether to embark on this path? Is it the right move? The wrong move? Anything anyone has to offer would be most welcome.

Nintendo consoles are usually the best of the bunch, quality hardware and first-party software-wise. It really depends how successful the Wii is further on into it's lifespan how much 3rd-party support it will continue to have.

I'm going to buy one when a. I have enough money ($400AU :() and b. They release a kick-ass FPS on it. :P

I'm trying to coax my mum into considering it, by saying that it's easy to play and she might really enjoy it...it looks good though.

I wait for at least a year to pass before I buy a new console. Until the range of games actually includes some half decent ones, there's no point in wasting a substantial amount of hard earned cash on a console.

Whenever they launch a console here, it's already about 6 months through :P

I got my Xbox360 at the Aus launch, no camping or anything, just walked in on the day and picked it up with Oblivion (Collector's Edition; hurrah for gimmicky yet oh-so-cool stuff).

Hey, cool! Thanks for the support, guys! I'll try and get one for Christmas and let you know how I like it! :D

Don't break anything playing it.

Danny Stewart December 4, 2006 8:55 PM

Indeed -- I have been reading about some disaster stories. I shall endeavor not to. ;)

You might want to check this out, too. Just so you know exactly what you're getting into.

Ben Dawson December 6, 2006 8:42 AM

the music sounded like something out of a Poke'mon game...so that's what's wrong with my Xbox 360, I've been feeding it beer and hotdogs.

You've gotta get red steel for it , it looks amazing.

Ben Dawson December 6, 2006 11:21 AM

do Xbox 360's like Red Steel?

LOL, thanks, RV, that made my day. Especially "What the hell are you doing? Stop it!" :D

What is it with you people and getting sucked in to terrible games...?

Red Steel = Terrible. I can vouch for that. Once you sit through an unskippable-yet-excruciatingly-long cinematic for the 25th time, you begin to wonder if it's worth living anymore...

Ben Dawson December 7, 2006 6:06 AM

it's good enough to get an immediate sequel planned

RV, I intend to run all potential game purchases by you from now on. I bow before your mighty knowledge and opinions. ;)

I totally agree. What is it with people buying games now because the "graphics are amazing", instead of focusing on the gameplay? Obviously graphics come into it some way as you don't really want to be playing with 80s Space Invader style but look at GTA for example, the graphics are nowhere near some titles but the gameplay is pretty much second to none.

No, it sold well enough to get a sequel planned.

My opinion is that graphics and gameplay are somewhat symbiotic, most of the best games ever made (Halo, Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 4) had great graphics for their time and great gameplay.

Although this theory is somewhat null in System Shock 2... The most awesomest cooltacular game ever.

Ben Dawson December 8, 2006 5:27 AM

I liked Halo, brilliant game.

Nintendo's brainwashing Danny

Nintendo is brainwashing Danny. Danny has recently said that he is considering getting the Nintendo Wii, after mentioning that he would never go into console gaming.
Here's how they have done it, over a year ago, they released the Nintendo DS, but aren't the initials of Danny Stewart DS? Yes they are, over a slow period, they have influenced his mind and are now instilling thoughts of getting a Wii. Think about it, it makes sense.
