Retrial Of A Timerat

1 Attachment(s)
I thought I'd have a go at doing another version of the Glynn theme, and this is the result. It was composed in FL Studio, with effects made in Coligua Light synthesizer, and edited in Steinberg WaveLab. It needs a better name really.

Attachment 311

Comment please! If you have any suggestions or better names for it, I'll alter it and submit it to Whomix.

Ronnie Rowlands August 8, 2007 1:40 PM

I'm sure you posted this on Whomix ages ago... Anyway, this mix is good, although not much like Glynn's theme. Not that this is a problem. If you make a theme which you intended to sound like a previous versioin, but didn't turn out that way, you should keep it a secret and say it was completely original.

You must be thinking of one of my other Trial Of A Timerat mixes. There are 2 others, Trial of a Timerat, and Trial of a Timerat V2.

Perhaps. But I need a name for it. I can never think of good names for things.

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 2:03 PM

Aww. You did the four-note melody 2 thing. :(

Other than that, I really like it. Great mix overall.

But if you fix the four-note melody 2 thing it will ascend from "great" to... err... "great plus."

The four note melody 2 thing is one trait of a badly organized, amateur mix, but I chose to do it for a change. And also, the McGann theme has it. I don't mind it much myself, but I can understand your annoyance; I used to hate it until I included it in this mix, now I don't mind it. Plus, I can't change it, because when I save the fruityloops file, it goes "Naughty naughty! I'll get rid of that!! " and deletes all the stuff that I don't own, like Sytrus, which I used for almost all of the tracks.

But, if you really want it with only 3 notes in you can have this:

Attachment 312; A quick and horrible modification.

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 3:01 PM

ROFL. I heard how you made that after one listen. Still, better than nothing I suppose. I guess that's just one more reason to move up to ACID!

Oh, and the McGann theme does not have that. It does it funkily during the intro as a lead-in to the theme, but during the theme proper, it does it correctly. :P

Superkid11 August 8, 2007 3:05 PM

I've listened to the other Time Rat trial (well, V2. I don't think I listened to v1) and found it great, as I have this one. Very good! I personally don't mind the 4-note melody 2 thing. :P(If you wanted to put your edit into the whole thing though I recommend a simple little program called Wavepad. Trust me, if anything, I do know about copying and pasting.)

You now have your own folder in my Doctor Who music collection along with Danny. :)

I suppose. But I always regard that as part of the theme proper. When does it start then? At the fast paced ticky drum bit, or the beginning of the Middle 8?

I always considered the theme proper to start at the start of the middle eight. The funky (read: wrong) melody 2 is just done as a lead-in, which makes it barely acceptable in and of itself. What isn't acceptable is the fact that it's brainwashed so many poor souls into thinking that that's how the melody actually goes. :(

It's a damn shame that's happened. What I think mainly contributes to it is that people go:

"Now, the next chord is... Em... so that means that... I play the E minor notes... but ... Downwards! Like this! ... Hmm, that doesn't sound right... I know! Theres another B at the bottom! Oh my god! I can play The Doctors Who song! Hey guys come over here and listen!"

Which spawns a generation of bad MIDI files. The sort that Keff has on his webpage.

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 3:22 PM

That's it, exactly. You got it dead on. Especially about Keff.

HEY! YOU!
DO YOU LIKE NOISES?
IF SO: LISTEN TO THIS!
Attachment 313

That's all of the sound FX used in the mix in no particular order.

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 3:52 PM

I LIKE NOISES.

And I like those sound effects.

Well done.

Josef Kenny August 8, 2007 4:01 PM

A quick 'sample mixture'; like a quickly mixed drink.

This is my vauge attempt at breakbeat:

Tell me if anythings wrong with the link and I'll relocate it; my website has been playing up.

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 4:15 PM

OMFG that may be the awesomest thing ever.

Next up, you need to make MC Muzz and MC Keff.

P.S. I know Peter Howell's email address and actually got a response from him once. This may be just what I need to get him to talk to me regularly.

Or perhaps not.

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 4:34 PM

If you need Keff material from which to make an MC Keff version, then here is all the Keff material you will ever need:

Superkid11 August 8, 2007 4:37 PM

Nice one! :) I like the beat.

To Danny: Oh come ON, you have a regular contact with Dominic Glynn AND somewhat with Murray Gold... would you really want to pester anyone else? :P

Danny Stewart August 8, 2007 5:00 PM

Peter Howell was actually the first Doctor Who musician I ever tried to contact. I tried for like seven months before he finally responded, but he only said he was too busy teaching to be able to help me with anything. :(

Then I moved on to Dom. And Dom's been nothing but fantastic, so I'm glad I went to him! :D

Josef Kenny August 9, 2007 8:13 AM

!!!
Listen to the melody 2 in this
See, even Marinedalek does it sometimes.

Danny Stewart August 9, 2007 9:03 AM

That's not Marinedalek, that's Mutagene.

Also, listen to how wrong the second layer is!
