DS.com's 5th year anniversary

I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but come December it will be the 5th birthday of DS.com. Which is consider a big achievement i f feel, since not many forums on the scale of the Internet ever make it this far. I thought that perhaps we should arrange or do something on here to celebreate this. As i am impressed and proud it has gone on this long. To also be a part of this great place for most of it;s run has also bee an honour. I would hate to let this year pass without giving a little celebration for this achievement. I wonder what the opinion on here is? :)

How about... we should have a 12 (or 24 hour) sit in, where everyone stays on the forums for 24 hours and... well... celebrates!

Chris Britton August 31, 2007 2:03 PM

That i can do, i can get some beer in. I should be on holiday from Uni then.

If thats the case, i suggest we all log into msn, stick webcams and microphones on and all try to spend the day a little bit closer together :)

I would actually love to be a part of something like that. I'll see what I can do.

Chris Britton August 31, 2007 2:05 PM

An online party, certianly would add to the memories of this place :)

Good idea, like the audio vibe. How about a radio station?

Yes, fine, lovely. :P

Fine, I'll get TeamSpeak. Tell me how to set up a server on Ubuntu 6.06.1.

Josef Kenny September 1, 2007 3:01 AM

Heres a nice article on setting up Teamspeak on Linux in general

And here is a much more conclusive article

When you've found out tell me set it up on a Windows PC. It'll be the first time Jez doesn't hang up on me on MSN.

Chris Britton September 1, 2007 7:08 AM

oh it's simple for everyone else, once Danny sets up the TS server and channel, you lot just download it and input the details in the main screen. No problem :)

EDIT: I've made this a sticky post at least for the time being, so more people can come and contribute :)

Danny Stewart September 1, 2007 1:39 PM

Thanks Rat Souffle. I've already attempted to get it set up but I'm running into problems.

Ronnie, all you need is a client, not a server. Just download and install.

Jez September 2, 2007 5:15 AM

I sense some screenshots on their way.... (will make new thread later with how-to screenies).

Danny Stewart September 2, 2007 5:38 AM

No, I've got the server installed and running, but I needed to restart it and it tells me the port is in use even though the server is not running. Apparently the way to fix it is through a server restart, but I do not want to restart the server.

We (well me at least) are all scared of server downtime.

Jez September 2, 2007 8:17 AM

To be honest, I think your server needs a reboot anyway Danny. :P

Make it last at least a couple of hours. Then we can all have fun running round going "Oooh! No! What am I going to do! DS.com's down! My life is at an end!!!" :P

Definitely.

Hate to break it to you, but Linux servers don't benefit from restarts the way Windows computers do. :P

I've seen stuff like this happen before during downtime. It's scary. :P

EDIT: I've just checked my server's uptime -- 136 days.

Chris Britton September 3, 2007 3:56 AM

Hmm, well we have had years to tap into and get in tune with the pyschic energy of the site ;)

Ronnie Rowlands December 23, 2007 7:47 AM

Surely we must be at that stage now. Where is everyone? I bought sausages on sticks :(
