His macbook pro is probably either screwed up in some way or his install was screwed up.

You'd think a senior member of a tech magazine would know if it was an OS thing or a hardware thing. But maybe he's a Dell fanboy. ****ing Dell fanboys.

Additionally, with a Dell, you do not get Mac OS X or Logic.

I'm aware of that, but the Dell is muuuuch cheaper and has double the amount of RAM.

Although, I'm not paying for it, so I guess that doesn't matter. :P

Let's not forget the standard Macbook, which is roughly equivalent to that Dell too.

A macbook of the same capacity would only cost a bit more than that Dell. It would have 40gb less hard drive space but a faster processor(2.2ghz), and the RAM is user serviceable. As long as you don't buy the RAM from apple the difference in cost between the two would be minimal.
My mom is thinking about getting one due to her current laptop getting pissy.



.... and also, is it possible to home-build a laptop? They don't strike me as very easy to make.

He needs advanced graphics though, which the standard MacBook cannot provide.

EDIT: I take that back. That Dell he linked to has the Intel GMA X3100, which is exactly what the MacBook has. RV, I thought you wanted advanced graphics?

No, he's explained it to me, his dad gets some kind of discount, plus Australia has some kind of vouchers that pay for half of a laptop for education or something like that. I don't remember the exact deal but it essentially means he can get a MacBook Pro for virtually nothing (and why the hell wouldn't you?).

I don't think so, laptops are too complex to DIY. There's airflow management, weight, keeping it compact, etc. I imagine some people do, but they're probably engineering wizards.

I discovered the student rebate isn't going to be implemented until I've left secondary school. Useful.

But yeah, my dad gets 1 laptop a year (from any provider) for half price because of his work. He's got like 3 laptops now O__o. That means I can get a Macbook Pro for around AUD$1500.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the Macbook Pro, anyway.

Not from Apple out of the box, but numerous solutions exist. The best one I've heard of is called Undercover: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
