Britain's New Coinage

back in 2005, the Royal Mint began a competition to redesign the UK's coins the results were revealed the other day http://www.royalmint.com/newdesigns/...sRevealed.aspx

they're on their way to british pockets. What are your thoughts?

I think they're awesome. So unexpected. Strange that there are no numerals on them, though.

Ben Dawson April 5, 2008 5:38 PM

What will happen to the old ones?

Ronnie Rowlands April 5, 2008 5:50 PM

They'll kick people's doors down and raid their houses for old coins, find them and throw them on a big fire.

No it's quite simple, they'll just start making the new coins at the royal mint and gradually all the old ones will vanish. Will take a couple of years though. Haven't you seen the new paper money they introduced a few months ago?

Ben Dawson April 5, 2008 5:54 PM

AAAAAARGH!!! They'll find my stash of...questionable material...uhoh.
Well, sounded likely they'd do something like that.

Ronnie Rowlands April 5, 2008 5:57 PM

What sort of collages have you been making with your coins, Ben?

Ben Dawson April 5, 2008 6:02 PM

Artistic and expressional ;)

Chris Britton April 5, 2008 6:43 PM

I'm going to try and preserve one of each of the old coins :) Purely from a sentimental point of view. I just need the 20p, £1 and £2 coins. I know it will be £3.88 wasted. But thats just my choice.

The new ones don't look bad either. Very nicely done. Wheres the new £2 coin though?

Ben Dawson April 5, 2008 7:45 PM

In my collection of artistic and expressional...art.

Ronnie Rowlands April 6, 2008 3:43 AM

I was pondering about that myself actually. I have no idea where the £2 is.

Jamie Minty April 6, 2008 4:43 AM

I think they're pretty cool. The bits of pictures is a bit strange but it looks goo when you put them together.

Hope they're not scrapping £2 coins!

Jez April 6, 2008 8:42 AM

The £2 is still relatively new so it'll probably just stay the same.

Don't really see why we need new coins though....especially these shitty things.

Ronnie Rowlands April 6, 2008 8:56 AM

Well Jez, look on the bright side, if they're bringing out these new designs (which by the way were designed by Matthew Dent from Bangor, only a few minutes from my quaint town) it's a sign we won't be using the dreaded Euro any time soon!

I'm not too sure of the 10 and 2 pence coins, never did like squares inside circles like that.

Darwin forbid you adopt the currency you were supposed to adopt when you joined the EU.

Chris Britton April 7, 2008 1:32 PM

EU FTL! Screw the continent! Except the Germans, they're cool.

Jez April 7, 2008 4:48 PM

Lol, I don't RV realises the general hatred the majority of UK citizens have for Europe. ;)

It's deep, and it's wide. :P

So wait; you like the people who tried to bomb your country to bits during WWII, but hate the rest who sort of, you know, didn't?

Why do the British hate Europe? You're only part of it, it's a paradox the likes of which only nationalism could provide. It's like Tasmanians saying they hate Australia...

...oh, wait. They do. They also have sex with their siblings. Dirty ****ers.

General rule of thumbs for the UK....or General Rules of Thumb for the UK:

1 - We dislike France
2 - We dislike the EC (European Community - that is, The EU)
3 - We like Polish people 'cos they sound funny and are decent plumbers.
4 - We apparently also dislike Polish people 'cos they take all the jobs the same lazy British slobs who dislike them can't be arsed to do. "They're taking all our jobs but we don't want to work as we like living off the st sta sta states" (illiterate boons).
5 - We like Norway....well, at least I do. They're not in the EC, although I like Norway for other reasons.

Now for some more serious reasons. The UK government has a tendancy to accept and follow any laws that the EU creates. At the same time, other countries have a tendancy to accept but not follow the same laws.

For example, there are a limitless number of laws regarding the fishing industry. British fishermen follow these laws which has caused a slump in their already struggling industry.

At the same time, the French and Spanish fishermen completely ignore these laws (some of which were created to allow a sustainable future for the industry).

One of these laws regard where fisherment from each nation can fish. The UK fisherment (on the whole; I don't doubt there are exceptions) stick to their designated area, whilst we get spanish INVADING (omg its teh armada) our areas.

Meh, I hate the French and Spanish. ;)

Josef Kenny April 8, 2008 3:48 PM

I like Sweden.

Chris Britton April 8, 2008 8:36 PM

I like Greece.

Also, got one of each of the old coins now. Just need a £2 piece now.
