But I'd take him up on it!

People handing out money is too good to be true, that's why.

Because we're set upon by people brandishing leaflets and clipboards in town centres enough to be extremely wary of people who look like they may be selling something. "Free money" offers are the staple diet of scammers and money-making schemes in general, so they are also avoided like the plague.
