We're moving!

DannyStewart.com is moving to a new web host. This means that I will no longer be hosting this web site on my own server. Instead, I will be paying for hosting from a professional web host (SCG Domains), and henceforth the site will be run courtesy of their services.

This is being done for two reasons, one of them professional and the other personal. The personal reason is simply that I have an increasing desire lately to own as few things as possible and to be responsible for less in my life. Having a server and keeping it running is a substantial commitment, and one that it doesn't make much sense to keep going, especially for something that is more than just a hobby (which this web site is).

From a professional standpoint, it has been made clear to me that I simply cannot provide the level of site uptime that you guys deserve. It doesn't make sense to run my own server to manage my web site if I can't provide you guys with the level of service that you should have. My dad has the unfortunate tendency to break the network connection that my server runs on (and to be honest, I have an unfortunate tendency to break the server itself). I don't want to make this site inaccessible to you all for periods of days at a time (like what happened last week). It took several hours for me to notice that the site was offline, and then a matter of days for us to simply visit the location where the server is stored and fix what was a relatively trivial issue. So from now on, you guys will have guaranteed 99.9% uptime. Additionally, I had not been backing up any data from the server. Our new host will manage daily backups of all our site content for us, so there's no risk of data loss.

So within the next few days we will be moving to a quality web host, and from there the site should continue to shine and function much the way it always has. You guys won't really notice anything different, except perhaps some greater speed and reliability, but I'll be happier knowing that this site that I am so proud of is hosted with someone who will take better care of it than I have.

Thanks for reading.

Alright. :) Looks pretty good. Yeah, with hosts like that it doesn't seem all that practical to own your own server... kind of sounds like it can be a headache once and a while.

Thats fine Danny, you're trying to make things easier for yourself and everyone and I have no doubt it will continue to offer the shining quality of DSF that we all know is around.

So I hope it goes well, thanks for doing this and see you on the new host it seems :)

We were down for like a week in the past two years. As far as I can tell we already had 99% uptime.

Not complaining though, just seems like you could put your money towards better things.

Maybe this is a good time to turn it into rocket lawnchair ho yes.

I've set up rocketlawnchairs.com with the new hosting company, so you never know.

We're on the new host now, guys! Let me know if you experience any problems. Otherwise, enjoy. :)

Chris Britton January 30, 2009 7:36 AM

I had to take the site offline to move it from one host to the other. (Well, technically I didn't, but any posts you made would have disappeared once the changeover happened, so it seemed pretty pointless to leave it up.) The reason you couldn't get on was because the site was being moved over. Now that the move is final, there shouldn't be any more downtime.

Chris Britton January 30, 2009 7:51 PM

I noticed I could get on yesterday but assumed it was because of the changeover so i did not worry.

Ross Hendrie January 30, 2009 9:11 PM

No problem, the main thing is that we are up and running again on the new host.
