Seriously, though. Probability says eventually there'll be a bad spinoff if they keep making them (the chance increasing the more they make). At best the spinoff can die quietly, at worst it's tied in to the main show (Doctor Who) so tightly that it ruins the entire franchise.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it. I've enjoyed both the ones they've made so far, and the more they make, the more they detach them from regular Doctor Who, so hopefully it won't be a problem.

I disagree. I think the effects are fine the way they are, and that Doctor Who has enough of a budget to thrive where it is. Frankly I don't want Doctor Who to have huge-budget special effects. It just wouldn't be right.
