If a new member knows at least one existing member, it is perhaps less likely that they will be ignored by the community, get bored and leave again shortly afterwards. Maybe it could also get rid of some of the bitching that seems to happen every time a new person arrives, making the forum a much better place for those that actually want to enjoy it
