I always considered the theme proper to start at the start of the middle eight. The funky (read:
wrong) melody 2 is just done as a lead-in, which makes it barely acceptable in and of itself. What isn't acceptable is the fact that it's brainwashed so many poor souls into thinking that that's how the melody actually goes.
