I've used the GIMP quite a bit in the past, sort of hoping I could use it to replace Photoshop. Unfortunately, it isn't really that good in comparison. I'm sure that will be rectified over time though, they're planning some overhauls, including the UI, that might turn it into a real contender (I'm hoping so). For now though (or at least, a few months ago when I used it last), it's pretty sucky.
Although, it can read PSD files, so it might be good for those who don't want to
appropriate Photoshop while those of us who do use Photoshop can and we can still swap files.
