First of all, I did try to warn you about CrossOver.

Second of all, I really, really wish you would use VMware Fusion. It's leaps and bounds better than anything else available, and if it's a big enough deal for you not to have to use pirated software, then just buy it. It's only $70 or so -- not going to break the bank.

Third, I have actually used VirtualBox before, in addition to Q. Both of them lack many features that are important (at least to me) in a virtualized environment, and they also both lack a degree of stability. You will be disappointed with the speed, responsiveness, and features available to you with VirtualBox, as you would be with Q.

And if you want Windows 98 for the aesthetics, why don't you just set your XP desktop theme to Windows Classic and change the Start menu back to classic as well?
