Grit your teeth and bare it is all I can reccomend.

Daryl -- I responded to Tom's suggestion and reminded everyone that we already had such a forum, and it really didn't work as it is now.

Danny Stewart May 10, 2007 11:15 AM

No, it's okay, I'm just saying it doesn't seem to be working at the moment. Any ideas on how we could try and improve the system we have now?

Jammy Jason May 10, 2007 1:33 PM

First of all, how easy is the thread you say is made for new members to get comfortable, maybe a shoutbox/chatbox on the main page should be introduced, fast, easy aquatences.

Danny Stewart May 10, 2007 2:31 PM

It's an entire forum. Go to the main page and see the Introductions Forum. The shoutbox idea may work. I'll see what I can find.

Jammy Jason May 10, 2007 3:06 PM

Yeah, numerous non-active members is a problem on almost every forum, but some have been reduced by a shoutbox of sort because of its fast introductions and other advantages.

Give me back my banning ability.

You know it's the only way.

I personally think this is a good idea. I've no idea if it's true that no new members in the past six months have contributed anything of value, as I fall into that category myself, but if that is indeed the case then perhaps invite-only is the way to go, as people would be brought in on the basis of what they can contribute to the forum. The other big advantage to this is that it could help to get rid of the problem of elitism that often happens of forums, and by extension maybe even the problem of one-post newbies. If a new member knows at least one existing member, it is perhaps less likely that they will be ignored by the community, get bored and leave again shortly afterwards. Maybe it could also get rid of some of the bitching that seems to happen every time a new person arrives, making the forum a much better place for those that actually want to enjoy it

Run along, little boy

Ronnie Rowlands May 11, 2007 6:27 AM

Why've you changed your last post? The one that said "sorry, can't you read more than 2 lines?"

Hamster May 11, 2007 6:31 AM

I decided that was maybe like being a bit childish and confrontational, so I went for indifference instead. Didn't want to come off as too hypocritical, though I admit the new one isn't much better!

Danny Stewart May 11, 2007 1:20 PM

Relax, Hamster. You'll grow accustomed to RV's ways in time. :P

Danny Stewart May 11, 2007 4:18 PM

This is still a possibility, but I don't know any more at the moment. I haven't decided anything more.

Wow, that would really hurt if I gave any sort of a toss what you think
