EarthVitalList.com

If the world was coming to an end, and you could save just one thing, what would it be?

EarthVitalList.com is a companion website for the new feature film remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still", with Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly . Visitors to the site are encouraged to vote for the "vital items" they would most want to save if the world came to an end, as well as create their own list of up to 12 "vital items".

"Vital Items" listed so far have ranged from the Bible and the works of Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare (the latter fictitiously wiped out in an episode of "Red Dwarf"), to artifacts from war museums "to remind us of the horrors of war", all the way down to Diet Coke and computers equipped with Windows Vista (I can only guess at Danny's reaction if the latter comes out on top).

An account to one of several sites, including MySpace and facebook, appears to be required in order to create your list.

A countdown timer is currently active on the site; it runs out at midnight Thursday night (December 11th) in each time zone, after which the submission of, and voting on, "vital items" ends. On Friday, December 12th (the same day the movie opens in North America), the site will publish a list of the 1,212 "vital items" that got the most votes. It will be interesting to see what items land at the top of this list.

Both websites are very intensive in the graphics department, and may take a while to load on slower computers.

And the most beloved thing on Planet Earth was...

Spoiler:
the video game "Halo III".

Honestly, a lot of people on this planet have no life.

2. Animation
3. Television
4. Cats
5. "Ugly Betty" (and the Spanish TV series it's based on)
6. God & Jesus
7. The Bible
8. Beer
9. Female nudity
10. Grapevines
11. Alcohol
12. Rob's Mom (Rob's the guy on MySpace, I think)

And the most valuable item in Canada, the country that just invested in a national Do Not Call list:

Spoiler:
Spam.

2. The Great Lakes
3. Coca-Cola
4. Computers
5. "The sexiest man alive."

With trends like this, if aliens ever come to visit, we are so screwed.

I think maybe there were more than a few troll votes.

I find it very hard to believe that the majority of voters took this list anywhere near seriously. The sad thing is, this would have actually been interesting if people had.

I'm well aware of that. My only point is that this list quickly turned from a study to a joke. As a joke, it's frankly boring and somewhat stale. As a study, it would have actually been interesting and worth reading.

I would tend to agree.

You have the Bible up there. If it was entirely a troll list, the internet would have put something to do with His Noodliness or Maddox's book or something.

I think this is more a demonstration of the stupidity of humanity in general than something people didn't actually take seriously. The list would have been much more interesting if it had been a joke.

Some things on the list are probably popular enough to be there. Personally I quite cherish my beer.

Despite this being the internet, I think it's mostly normalfags that didn't take it seriously. They would be unlikely to have been Touched by His Noodly Appendage.

But yeah, I think a good chunk of that is just people being stupid too.
