Nirvana

What is your favourite Nirvana song? Mine would have to be a cross between "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Something in the Way", "Breed", "Territorial Pissings", "Come as you Are", "You Know You're Right", "Lithium", well, basically all of them just about. There all fantastic really, although my least favourite has to be "Sliver" and "Been A Son", can't like everything I suppose.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the first ever song song I learned to play all the way through on guitar (including solo), for me that song is very special, it somes up just about everthing I would like to do, it's all about Teen Angst that song.

Hey ! Me too so far, (going up from all my recent interests)

1995 to present, Comedies of Rik mayall and Ade edmondson..(Learnt al about them, own them all)

1996-2004 (I watch old videos occaisionally,) wwf wrestling.(I stopped watching WWF, because it turned crap in 2003, and eventually, i gave up. In my opinion, WWF was brilliant from 1993-2001, after that, crap, due to bad writing and being sheer crap).

1998-A touch of frost. (I have seen all episodes, and I have learned all about it)

2004,Laurel and hardy( I have seen all the films and learned all about them)

2005- Doctor Who.( I learned all about it, and I'm currently still collecting episodes when I can. I don't bother with CD's or audio dramas or merchandise)

2000-The two Ronnies (still collecting)

2006- Monk. (Still learning and collecting)

2006- Chubby Brown ( I recently discovered him, I've learnt all about him, and bought all his videos )

Quite a good record wouldnt you say

Really couldn't say to be honest, I like so much. My current favourite is probably Muse though I love Radiohead and a lot of older Classic Rock (the Stones, Hendrix etc); I'm not really that discriminating.

I like Nirvana too Ben . My personal fave is In Bloom though the songs you mentioned (Teen Spirit/Come as You Are) are great too. My least favourite is probably Heart Shaped Box though inexplicably I still have it on iTunes...

As for favourite song ever I'd have to say either Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd (always have to check if I spelled that damn name right ) or Little Green Bag by George Baker Selection (yes the Reservoir Dogs one...), though I have also grown quite attatched to Supermassive Black Hole, Knights of Cydonia and Time is Running Out by Muse lately too.

Uhh yeah I think that's it. Apologies if I bored you with my extreme rock nerdiness.

And Ben if you ever want to drone on about Nirvana for hours, just talk to me .

Ok, so that's another Nirvana fan then. And so close to home as well. I'm currently working on a cover of their Song "Tourette's", I don't have a band here so I have to play guitar, bass and drums, I'll let you here it once I'm finished (if it turns out alright). My mum's just got in so I wont be able to do the lyrics tonight as I have to scream them.

I used to like a band called Rammstein... The closest thing to rock I listen to these days are industrial songs that happen to have guitars in them.

Angry grinding machine music.

Also, Ben, do you have a distortion/overdrive pedal?

no, but I have been thinking about it. But my Amp is pretty decent (as in, you could do concerts with it) and has some good overdrive sounds. But it's not the best in th world (but it's very good) and the pedals do have a better overdriven sound (as that's what they're supposed to be there for).

Get a Chaos / Kaoss Pad and modify it for your guitar. Effects galore and all you need is a finger. (LINKAGE!)

Where'd I get that idea from? Matt Bellamy of Muse of course!

Muse are probably my favourite band in the long run. Almost all of their songs are an event on their own and they've done enough to prove that we're not all banjos and beards down here in the South West (Bellamy went to my sixth form ftw!.....not at the same time, obviously!) Not only that, but musically, they are brilliant. One of my greatest inspirations, infact.

Also, they are the best live band in the world at this moment in time. Anybody who disagrees needs to buy themselves a pair of tickets to see Muse's next gig in their locale. You will be proven wrong.

The other band in the running is Genesis simply because they were awesome throughout the 40 years they were making music. Another band of musical legends.

Here here! I love Muse. And also Genesis, incidentally, though I prefer the stuff that Phil Collins recorded solo (Easy Lover and In The Air Tonight are two examples). Some other stuff I like are Whitesnake and KISS (pretty much everything from the 80s ).

You can't go wrong with Whitesnake. Nor can you with KISS for that matter. I also like Phil Collin's solo stuff although I struggle to remember whether I heard his solo stuff before his Genesis stuff or not!

Also, I have taken the trouble to upload a video of Muse playing Hysteria live at Earls Court to my webspace.

Muse - Hysteria Live Video. (25MB - .wmv format)

It was a video that they gave away over the net to advertise their Absolution DVD, which was being released shortly afterwards. Chances are, if you're a Muse fan, you've got this video anyway, or at least seen it.

I have to say that I don't think it's a brilliant example of their live spirit as it's relatively tame in nature, although Hysteria has traditionally been a set opener so they're warming up, rather than blowing minds. You still get to see the traditional style of Chris waving his head around whilst playing a ridiculously impossible bass riff and walking calmly around the stage, as well as Matt's trademark "guitar swinging" that is a regular feature of their performaces.

Buying the DVD will show you the full scale of Muse's live power - it includes their Glastonbury 2004 set that closed that year's festival on Sunday night (co-headlining with Orbital, who were doing their last ever gig). Alternatively, if you get a chance to see any of their Reading 2006 footage, watch it. That was the night they unveiled their complete lighting and pyrotechnics set and was an absolutely awesome watch!

I won't be hosting the file for long (no more than two weeks) so if you want to take a peek, better try and download it soon (if you can't within two weeks, let me know when you can and I'll do my best to make sure it's up for you).

Enjoy.

It would kinda be polite to at least let me know if any of you are interested. This is taking up 25MB of much needed webspace...

Genesis are reforming! The Turn It On Again Tour starts next summer, with two UK gigs in London and Manchester. Why Germany gets eight dates and the UK only two is beyond me though. I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on some tickets.
