Derbyshire 2010 Stereo Mix (not Mark Ayres related)
The other day I was listening to the Derbyshire theme, and I wondered what a proper Stereo Mix would sound like. it's been killing all week, so I decided to put this Together.

It's nothing really. Just the televised version on one side and the radiophonic on the other. I stereoized (is that a word?) the Derbyshire DOD game melody. Applied stereo echo and reverb, and other strange FX on everything. And spangles. Hope y'all like it. It's not perfect.

I actually like the idea behind this mix. I've never been a fan of MArk's stereo themes (I've always said that he sucks the life out of any theme he stereoizes). I think this is a better starting point, as it retains the quality of the originals, which MArk's have lost. Well done.

Thanks Danny. The thing with mark's themes are that he edits it element by element and goofs up the EQ which makes it sound like he did it over night. and (obviously you know this) center channel mixing with mark's themes makes certain elements appear. And this mix does not. Not to mention there's stereoized spangles. We all love spangles.

Danny have you ever tried stereoizing a theme? You could make it sound better since you can start from scratch.

Right on all counts. It's a little surprising that MArk doesn't realize what makes the themes sound so good is that slight analog compression and artifacts that come from doing things on tape back in the good old days. With both the Derbyshire and Howell themes, he's made them too clean, to the point where they're lifeless—almost sterile. Sadly it's something I don't think he'll ever learn, and it's why "remastered" versions of the themes will never (and should never) replace the originals.

I did start a project like this way back in 2008, doing the Derbyshire theme in stereo element-by-element, but it never made it very far. You can hear what I ended up with here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/556085/Derbyshire%20Stereo.mp3
