It's not random! I just proved the pattern! Just because there are exceptions doesn't make it random!
One black on its own does exist, I just can't remember what it is. And three gold and one black also means something, but it just isn't widely used. |

...I know a regular PIP is an Ensign. What's a regular warrant officer's insignia if a CWO is a single black pip?
 Also, Danny, only the regional unit's bars are complex. The standard pattern is very simple.
