Star Wars Technical Thread

Got a burning question about SW? How do you read those Imperial rank badges? How fast is a hyperdrive? What do you get when you cross Jar Jar and an Ewok? Curious, in dire need of an answer, or just messing around, it doesn't matter. Ask away.

*tranquilizes Danny*

Anyway, Ross, you can read Imperial insignia with a little practice. There's a mathmatical formula that can apply to any insignia.

Blue Squares=1
Red Squares=2
Gold Squares=2.5, unless it pairs with another gold, in which case each is 1.25
Standard Code Cylinders=-1
The Motti or "spark plug" cylinders=-0.5

Example:

Three red+Three blue+One Standard Cylinder=6+3-1=8. This is a Captain/Colonel.

That's a ridiculously complicated insignia pattern. Star Trek's pips are instantly more readable and universally recognizable. I'm surprised the x, y, and z variables aren't in that equation anywhere...

Actually Imp rank badges are infinately more logical. The Trek rank badges have a hollow black pip seemingly thrown in at complete random.

No, no, no! A black pip is equal to one-half of a gold pip! It makes perfect sense.

Gold = 1
Gold and Black = 1 and 1/2
Two Gold = 2
Two Gold and Black = 2 and 1/2

Ridiculously simple, no? It's not "thrown in at complete random," and it certainly isn't confusing.

Yeah but what's 3 Gold and one Black, that's not in the series. And where is one Black on it's own? See it's thrown in at random.
